The saffron spice is also called 'The red gold' and it is not without reason. The fine dried anther is the most expensive spice in the world. Saffron has a sweet, mild and exotic scent and taste - a bit like honey or syrup. The spice is used both in baked goods but also in wonderful fish, seafood and rice dishes. The spice not only gives off a good taste, but also gives what is added to it the characteristic yellow colour. For this reason, saffron has also been used as a natural dye.

Saffron is the pistil of the saffron crocus (flower) it comes mainly from Iran and Morocco.

Saffron comes from the crocus flower Crocus Sativa, which only blooms in autumn. The flowers in which the anther, which becomes saffron, sits must be hand-picked and dried. After the harvest, between 75,000 and 100,000 kilos of flowers are used to produce just 1 kilo of the fantastic and precious spice.
